Latinas Playwright Roundtable

Join Rose Cano (Resident Director, eSe Teatro), Marisela Treviño Orta (Shoe), Julieta Vitullo (Resident Dramaturg and Playwright, eSe Teatro) and Rebecca Tourino Collinworth (Artistic Director, Parley) for this engaging roundtable discussion about playwriting, Latinx theatre, bringing work to the stage and much more.

Marisela’s most recent work, Shoe, was workshopped and produced as an enhanced play reading in October. A recording is currently available to watch on-demand on our website for a limited time.

eSe Teatro empowers local Latinx artists to create, produce and promote professional theater in English, Spanish, bilingual and Spanglish. Providing a voice for Latinx artists as well as Latinx communities by sharing culturally and socially relevant stories through our innovative programming, workshops, and initiatives.

Meet the Participants

Rose Cano is the Founding Member (2010) and Resident Director of eSe Teatro. She is a graduate of Cornish College. She served as artistic director at eSe Teatro from 2012 – 2019. She is a bilingual actor, playwright, director, storyteller and lyricist. Her plays Don Quixote & Sancho Panza, Homeless in Seattle and Bernie’s Apt. were produced with ACT Theatre in Seattle, where she directed and translated the international premiere of The Journey of the Saint by César de María.

She is the playwright/lyricist for ROVID productions with composer David Nyberg. Their first musical Imaginary Opus: A Sensory Experience in Two Acts, was produced with Sound Theatre of Seattle. Next, People in the Square will be coproduced with Trial and Error Productions in 2021, in Pioneer Square, Seattle.

Marisela Treviño Orta is a graduate of the Iowa Playwrights Workshop, a Core Writer at the Playwrights’ Center, and under commission by Audible. Her awards include the 2006 Chicano/Latino Literary Prize in Drama, 2009 Pen Center USA Literary Award in Drama, 2013 National Latino Playwriting Award, and 2019 Kendeda Finalist. Her plays have been presented at Arizona Theatre Company, Brava Theater, Halcyon Theatre, Kitchen Dog Theater, Milagro, Nashville Children’s Theatre, New Jersey Repertory Company, Oregon Shakespeare Festival, and Shotgun Players. Her produced plays include A Place to Belong, Braided Sorrow, Ghost Limb, Heart Shaped Nebula, Somewhere, Return to SenderThe River Bride, Wolf at the Door, and Woman on Fire.

Julieta Vitullo is the Resident Dramaturg and a playwright for eSe Teatro. She is an accomplished bilingual writer, playwright and dramaturg born and raised in Argentina. She received an MA in English and a PhD in Latin American literature from Rutgers, and taught culture and language for two decades. Her writing has been published in the U.S., England, Ireland, Argentina, Brazil and Spain. She’s the author of a book on the fictions of the Malvinas/Falklands War, and the protagonist and co-script writer of the 2012 award winning documentary film La forma exacta de las islas. She’s an associate playwright at Parley and has written the full-length plays About Marilyn, Iguazú, Two Big Black Bags and Cornelia’s Visitors, in addition to several shorts. www.julietavitullo.com

Rebecca Tourino Collinsworth is the creator and artistic director of Parley, a playwrights’ group and producing entity in Seattle, Washington. A mother of two, Rebecca is a graduate of the University of California, Berkeley (BA, English), the University of California, Irvine (MFA, Acting), and the Pacific Conservatory Theatre. At twenty, she made her professional acting debut at the rebuilt Globe Theatre in London, and she has since acted in regional theaters all over the United States. As a teaching artist, she’s worked with the Claire Trevor School of the Arts at UC Irvine; the Alliance Theater in Atlanta; the New York Film Academy in Soho; Seattle University; Meadows School of the Arts at SMU; Freehold Theatre Studio/Lab; Freehold’s Ensemble Training Intensive; and served for three years as Resident Playwright at the Washington Correctional Center for Women as part of the Engaged Theater Residency. Her plays have been produced in New York, Los Angeles, Seattle, and elsewhere at venues such as the American Theatre of Actors, Center Stage, and the Barrow Group. As a director, she has helmed over 50 world premieres in the last four years alone. She currently teaches playwriting, acting, and voice through her tiny home studio, Salvo.
